Understanding the ‘Expert’ Brain

General ‘Expert’ Traits

People who have well developed Expert Brains are generally serious, analytical individuals who like planning and setting goals. They like efficiency, logic and accuracy. Thriving on details and discipline, the fact-oriented Experts pride themselves on being correct. They like to know exactly what is required of them. They want to know in detail how things work so that they can carefully, objectively evaluate any problems. The Expert tries to avoid embarrassment so people with a well-developed Expert brain will have a high level of self-control.

High scoring Experts have usually over-developed behaviours and thinking associated with the left Pre-frontal Cortex functioning of the brain. This may lead them to believe that success only comes from being right and producing high quality results every time. Experts often strive to be perfect and can be very tough on themselves setting high standards that are too difficult to maintain in an uncertain world. The Expert’s strength comes from being able to logically work out the best way to achieve something without letting their emotions distract and interfere with the decision making process. To others, people who are Expert Brain dominant can appear to be very fussy, lacking emotion and sometimes fussy and picky.

We all have access to the Expert Brain and can therefore use thoughts and behaviours that enable us to learn, retain and recall knowledge/experiences easily if we practice thoughts and behaviours associated with this function. The key is not to over or under develop this part of your brain. During school/college years this area is highly stimulated. This is when we learn that getting the answers ‘right’ means we are winners (see Hunter Brain) and good (see Gatherer Brain). People who cannot get the answers ‘right’ may learn to believe that they are losers, bad, or even stupid and stop developing their Expert Brain.
